How a person should react if they witness an Amputation?

The main focus should be that the amputation may not bleed much. For this process following measures can be taken:

  • If available, try to touch the wound after washing your hands and then put on gloves. However, if gloves are not available any cleanest material available can be used.
  • Make sure that you lie down the injured person and remove or clean any visible clothing around the wound and forget not to elevate the bleeding site or injured area.
  • Apply full direct pressure for 15-20 minutes to stop bleeding however if this does not happen as bleeding may continue to 30-45 minutes the wound should be a splint or cleaned to prevent further damage or infection.
  • While applying pressure you need to make sure that pressure should be light just to slow down blood loss.

How to bring an amputated part to a hospital?

The main focus should be that the amputation may not bleed much. For this process following measures can be taken:

  • Rinse dirt and debris from the part with clean water but keep it in mind you don’t scrub the part.
  • Wrap the amputated part in a clean cloth, if possible in sterile gauze.
  • Put the part in a plastic or waterproof bag and place the bag on ice. The major focus is to keep the part cool but its direct contact with ice may more cause damage.
  • Send the injured part with the patient to the hospital.
