Studies show that women are experiencing headaches three-time than men. A big question lies here what causes migraines in females more than men. There can be many factors such as mood swings, hormonal drops, menstrual imbalance, and many others.

This pain may manifest itself in different stages. It can generally progress through four stages. However, not everyone suffering from migraines goes through all these stages. You may cycle through all these stages or you may experience just one or two stages.

The pain can be divided into four stages. Pain may increase itself in different stages. The following are the mentioned stage where you can check which stage you are in and accordingly consult a doctor.

  • Prodrome: You might notice subtle changes before an upcoming migraine. These changes include; mood changes, food cravings, constipation, increased thirst, or frequent yawning.
  • Aura: Auras are reversible symptoms of your nervous system. The symptoms may begin gradually but can last for 20 to 60 minutes.
  • Attack: A migraine’s duration varies from person to person. But during a migraine attack, you might have pain on one or both sides of your head.
  • Post-drome: After a migraine attack, you might feel drained or washed out for up to a day. Moreover, sudden head movement may bring on the pain again.

Above are the four stages which may vary from person to person. Therefore it is also important to know about the causes of migraines in females.

Let’s elaborate on the various causes of migraines in females:

  1. Hormones: Hormones imbalance is the main reason women experience migraines. These fluctuations in the hormones called estrogen and can contribute to developing various chronic headaches or migraines. The female reproductive system is controlled by hormones. If the estrogen level drops it causes a headache.
  2. During the period of pregnancy: Your estrogen levels rise quickly, particularly in the first trimester. It happens to help the uterus and placenta to transfer nutrients and support the development of your baby. So you may sometimes feel headaches due to changes in estrogen levels.
  3. Before Menstrual Cycle: The estrogen level drops shortly before you got your periods. This drop may lead to the migraines problem.
  4. Sleep Problems: Irregular sleep patterns or sleep disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia may cause migraines and tension-type headaches. Sleep problems can also trigger migraines in females to large extent.
